Your School Brain 5th through 12th grades
 
Goal:

This is an interactive program that teaches students of all levels how to learn more easily and effectively by understanding their learning styles. Students will learn how to work with their learning style and disposition to make classwork and homework easier; use brain-based techniques to learn new information so that it is incorporated into their long-term memory most effectively; use strategies that make it easier to focus and learn even in classes where the subject matter isn’t particularly interesting to them; apply the most effective and up-to-date (as well as fun and creative) study techniques, including: idea-mapping, acrostic and acronym mnemonics, visual mnemonics, and point of loci memorization; use the newest research-based techniques for improving test performance. We'll also provide a list of innovative and interesting sources, including books, websites, and software, that help students of all abilities study across the curriculum.

Time:

1:00 to 4:00pm on Saturdays (please contact us for dates scheduled)

Jumpstart College
Application Seminar
8th through 12th grades
 
Goal:

To understand and build an action plan for the college admissions process. Families will leave the workshop with tools, resources, and direction on how to develop a college list, understand academic and application requirements, write a thoughtful and reflective personal statement, understand of the details of the financial aid process, and deal with the college entrance tests (SAT I, SAT Subject Tests, and ACT).

Time:

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm every first and third Thursday of each month (except holidays).

Length: 2 hours

This is a workshop designed specifically for entering seniors who would like to finish their University of
California and Common Application before even beginning their senior year. Students also have the
option of attending a fourth day of intensive SAT test preparation for an additional fee.

Topics:
  • How learning style impacts college and major choices.
  • Differences and Similarities between UC and Common Apps.
  • Constructing your list of activities and awards.
  • Brainstorming, writing, and individual feedback for each application essay.
  • Preparing Recommendation Letters.
  • Practicing for College Interviews.
